How to handle stress before a casting call
In order to give you the best chance of success, here are some tips for managing stress during an audition.
Whilst good stress will increase your adrenalin and ensure you give of your very best during your audition, bad stress risks causing you to lose control. Give yourself the best chance by following these pieces of advice on how to handle stress before a casting call :
Prepare in advance
The night before, put all of the documents you’ll need in your bag. And of course, don’t forget your book!
Check your route before getting in the car or the bus.
Make sure to get on early to reduce the chances of any problems en route.
Let off steam
If you get the chance, why not work up some sweat before your audition?
The endorphins released will make you feel better. Find an activity that lets you clear your head and makes you feel confident.
Your stomach might be in knots.
However, it’s not a good idea to go to your audition on an empty stomach. Making sure you’re full of energy can only be help.
Imagine in advance the questions that the casting directors might ask you. Preparing some responses should also reassure you.
Be careful not to learn your text by heart though, as this can give off a robotic impression.
Breathing exercices to let out stress before a casting call
Breathing properly also reduces stress.
Make sure you breathe from the abdomen, it will help tremendiously if you’re starting to feel shaky. Take a deep breath, inflating your stomach, and then exhale very slowly through the nose or mouth.
Keep things in perspective
If you tell yourself: “it will be a disaster if I fail this casting”, you won’t be in the right frame of mind to succeed. It will only make you worse at handling the stress next time you’re up for a casting call.
So, tell yourself “it would be great if I get through, but if I don’t there will be others”.
Don’t dramatise things and think positively. These are the keys to success.
